APIs are easy way to connect with other websites & web services to use their data to make your site or application even better. This simple tutorial gives you the basics of how you can access this data and use it. If you want to know if a website has an api, just search "Facebook API" or "Twitter API" or "Foursquare API" on google. Some APIs are easy to use (like Locu's API which we use in this video) some are more complicated (Facebook's API is more complicated than Locu's). They approached me about a month ago asking if I could compile a list of some of my favorite internet tricks from their website, so I dug around and made this list: http://bit.ly/AdvancedTricks. I got inspiration for each of the useful tricks in my video from their website, and wouldn’t have done it without them. So special thanks for the sponsorship! Project History & More Info: I’m usually more geared toward hands-on hacks and projects, but these little internet/computer tricks were fun to play with as well. Some of them I already knew about and have been using since the beginning of time … like screen capturing and private browsing. But many of them were new to me. Like using Quicktime to record my screen, and downloading my Facebook profile. Who knew? I have a screen capture program I purchased for $40, but I was having so much trouble with it, I ended up just using the Quicktime trick to record all the on-screen video for this compilation. It works great! From a little quick research, I saw the “barrel roll” trick with Google has been known since 2010, but this was the first time I’ve seen it. It was new to me, and to my wife as well and we really liked it, so I included it for those other people like us who haven’t seen it yet. In closing, I don’t expect these tricks will be new to everyone. In-fact I expect quite the opposite. But I do expect that the majority of viewers will see a trick or two that they didn’t know about. I hope my compilation was fun to watch, and educational at the same time. If you felt inspired or learned something new, please like my video and share it with your friends. It will help make them smarter as well. Win/Win! :)

What exactly is an API? Finally learn for yourself in this helpful video from MuleSoft, the API experts. https://www.mulesoft.com/platform/api The textbook definition goes something like this: “An application programming interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. An API expresses a software component in terms of its operations, inputs, outputs, and underlying types. An API defines functionalities that are independent of their respective implementations, which allows definitions and implementations to vary without compromising each other. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. APIs often come in the form of a library that includes specifications for routines, data structures, object classes, and variables. In other cases, notably SOAP and REST services, an API is simply a specification of remote calls exposed to the API consumers. An API specification can take many forms, including an International Standard, such as POSIX, vendor documentation, such as the Microsoft Windows API, or the libraries of a programming language, e.g., the Standard Template Library in C++ or the Java APIs. An API differs from an application binary interface (ABI) in that an API is source code-based while an ABI is a binary interface. For instance POSIX is an API, while the Linux Standard Base provides an ABI”. To speak plainly, an API is the messenger that runs and delivers your request to the provider you’re requesting it from, and then delivers the response back to you. To give you a familiar example, think of an API as a waiter in a restaurant. Imagine you’re sitting at the table with a menu of choices to order from, and the kitchen is the provider who will fulfill your order. What’s missing is the critical link to communicate your order to the kitchen and deliver your food back to your table. That’s where the waiter (or API) comes in. ”AHEM” The waiter takes your order, delivers it to the kitchen, and then delivers the food (or response) back to you. (Hopefully without letting your order crash if designed correctly) Now that we’ve whetted your appetite, let’s apply this to a real API example. In keeping with our theme, let’s book a flight to a culinary capital – Paris. You’re probably familiar with the process of searching for airline flights online. Just like at a restaurant, you have a menu of options to choose from ( a dropdown menu in this case). You choose a departure city and date, a return city and date, cabin class, and other variables (like meal or seating, baggage or pet requests) In order to book your flight, you interact with the airline’s website to access the airline’s database to see if any seats are available on those dates, and what the cost might be based on certain variables. But, what if you are not using the airline’s website, which has direct access to the information? What if you are using online travel service that aggregates information from many different airlines? Just like a human interacts with the airline’s website to get that information, an application interacts with the airline’s API. The API is the interface that, like your helpful waiter, runs and and delivers the data from that online travel service to the airline’s systems over the Internet. It also then takes the airline’s response to your request and delivers right back to the online travel service . And through each step of the process it facilitates that interaction between the travel service and the airline’s systems - from seat selection to payment and booking. So now you can see that it’s APIs that make it possible for us all to use travel sites. They interface with with airlines’ APIs to gather information in order to present options back to us The same goes for all interactions between applications, data and devices - they all have API’s that allow computers to operate them, and that's what ultimately creates connectivity. API’s provide a standard way of accessing any application, data or device whether it is shopping from your phone, or accessing cloud applications at work. So, whenever you think of an API, just think of it as your waiter running back and forth between applications, databases and devices to deliver data and create the connectivity that puts the world at our fingertips. And whenever you think of creating an API, think MuleSoft.

Programming plays a huge role in the world that surrounds us, and though its uses are often purely functional, there is a growing community of artists who use the language of code as their medium. Their work includes everything from computer generated art to elaborate interactive installations, all with the goal of expanding our sense of what is possible with digital tools. To simplify the coding process, several platforms and libraries have been assembled to allow coders to cut through the nitty-gritty of programming and focus on the creative aspects of the project. These platforms all share a strong open source philosophy that encourages growth and experimentation, creating a rich community of artists that share their strategies and work with unprecedented openness. But, how can that be possible? Well, in this video I came across a very interesting text, which I've decided to share with you. in this text, the author stated that programming/software development is not the same as coding. And well, if you know me, whenever I find something interesting, I create a video to share with you guys... And this is exactly what I did in this video. For a lot of software developers, coding and programming is the fucking same thing. if you do a simple search on the internet, you'll find the below definition for both terms: Coding "Digital Technology. a set of symbols that can be interpreted by a computer or piece of software: binary code; Java code; the symbolic arrangement of statements or instructions in a computer program, or the set of instructions in such a program:" Programming "the act or job of creating computer programs" However, they are not the same thing. So, do you wanna know more about why coding is not the same as programming? Watch this video and find out! Abstract: Coding algorithms (i.e., MPEG, Reed-Solomon) power the Internet by providing efficiency and reliability. Unfortunately, today’s algorithms are unable to respond to dynamically changing network conditions or mobile user demand. A new class of coding algorithms called Network Coding, are entering the market and bringing flexibility, security, resilience and reliability. This workshop looks at Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) and describes it in the context of several IoT use cases. The focus of the use cases will be on bringing security and reliability to dynamic systems; extending battery life in embedded devices and meshing. Bio: Laila is a serial entrepreneur and Fortune 100 trained executive, focused on applying technology innovation to real world problems. Her current project is to enable the broad adoption of network coding, a coding technology that brings order-of-magnitude performance improvement wherever data is stored or transported. Network coding will be a critical enabling ingredient to the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. Laila’s work with technology innovation began during her ten-year stint as Director of Strategic Investments for Intel Capital. She was actively involved in investing in new start-ups, incubating new product and service ideas, and spinning out technologies. During that period Laila invested in such enabling technologies as RIM (the first Blackberry delivered email via a two way pager system) and in Red Hat and VA Linux (early leaders in Linux/Open Source market). While at Intel, she was also part of the executive team that launched Itanium® microprocessor family; her formation of the Intel® 64 Fund provided the basis for a Harvard Business School’s case study N9-800-351. Prior to joining Intel, Laila spent ten years in corporate banking, managing agented bank groups in the Mid West. Laila was also part of the original development team for Microsoft Excel in 1985 and holds a BA from Wellesley College.

A lot of you requested that I do a video with some software development in it. Well it turns out a gift I received a few months ago from my friend Greg in the form of a Belkin WeMo switch turned on a lightbulb over my head (No pun intended, or was it... I forget). Anyways here is the video showing you the C# .NET code written in Visual Studio 2012 and the command line batch script that drives the WeMo application I developed to automate the process of detecting when the internet is not reachable and powercycling the cable modem automatically and as many times as it takes before internet is restored. This will solve the huge problem I have where my cable modem goes offline during vacation and I can't remote to my machine or the cable modem locks up while we're watching Netflix in the bedroom and I have to go to the closet and unplug it and get out of my nice, warm, cozy bed! I hope you guys enjoy the video and take a look at the code and I hope some developers or aspiring developer see this video and find a use for the code I have created and continue to build on it and make it better. Due to the huge time constraints on this project because of my busy life I had to skip a lot of error checking and segmentation steps to make the code perfect but I got to the point where it serves my purpose. The cool thing this project demonstrates is that even though Belkin didn't release any software to control these devices outside of the iOS platform (iPhone & iPad) it is possible to intercept the traffic from these devices and devise a way to communicate with them in a supported way from any platform (Windows, .NET framework, etc). Now other people can utilize this library to build more robust automation and do some seriously cool things with these devices (christmas lights anyone)? ABOUT WeMo SWITCH If it plugs in, you can turn it on or off with WeMo. Just plug your lamp, or fan, or stereo (almost anything) into the WeMo Switch, and you're ready to control it with the WeMo app. Technology Used: C# .NET 4.5 Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate Windows 8 Windows 7 Command Script (Batch File) Source Code + Binaries: http://www24.zippyshare.com/v/90905687/file.html Thanks! Coding With Python :: Learn API Basics to Grab Data with Python This is a basic introduction to using APIs. APIs are the "glue" that keep a lot of web applications running and thriving. Without APIs much of the internet services you love might not even exist! More about APIs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Api Code from the video: http://pastebin.com/tFeFvbXp If you want to learn more about using APIs with Django, learn at http://CodingForEntrepreneurs.com for just $25/month. We apply what we learn here into a Django web application in the GeoLocator project. The Try Django Tutorial Series is designed to help you get used to using Django in building a basic landing page (also known as splash page or MVP landing page) so you can collect data from potential users. Collecting this data will prove as verification (or validation) that your project is worth building. Furthermore, we also show you how to implement a Paypal Button so you can also accept payments. Django is awesome and very simple to get started. Step-by-step tutorials are to help you understand the workflow, get you started doing something real, then it is our goal to have you asking questions... "Why did I do X?" or "How would I do Y?" These are questions you wouldn't know to ask otherwise. Questions, after all, lead to answers.
